crown drilling dental

For those needing it, crown drilling is a viable course of action to ready a tooth for a crown – a type of dental restoration which covers damaged or decayed teeth, but also improves the aesthetic appearance of the mouth.

Dental crowns are a great way to enhance damaged or severely decayed teeth, and they also make for effective treatments to improve the aesthetics of a tooth’s appearance. Crown drilling is the process employed to ensure the crown fits securely and is properly affixed to the damaged or decayed tooth. The procedure entails carefully reshaping the existing tooth by using precise drilling instruments to create an ideal space for the crown to be positioned in. Consequently, the crown sits snugly against the patient’s natural tooth, giving it a natural look once it is in place.

The manufacturing of crowns involves the use of a variety of materials, such as porcelain, metal and composite resin, carefully crafted to fit around the tooth like a glove.

To successfully affix a crown, dentists must first break out their drill to make space. This is accomplished by trimming away a portion of the tooth’s surface, known as crown drilling.

Tooth drilling can be conducted on the anterior and posterior parts of the mouth. This process is fairly uncomplicated and comfortably accommodates an appointment duration of a single session.

The dentist will numb the affected region with local anesthetic to cease sensation from the tooth and the space surrounding it. A rubber protective cover will be adhered over the tooth to prevent it from becoming contaminated or drenched.

Once the dentist has assessed the tooth, a drill is employed to carefully excise the outer layer. The extent of the abrasion is contingent upon the form of crown being employed.

To install a metal crown, the dentist must carve away a larger portion of the tooth structure than what is necessary for a porcelain one. To guarantee a perfect fit, they will also make sure that extra space is left in the area where the crown shall be brought into use.

Following the alteration of the tooth, an impression will need to be taken by the dentist in order to form the desired crown. This imprint will serve as a cast for the production of the crown.

After the tooth is prepared, the information is sent to the dental lab, where artisan professionals will hand-craft a personalized crown in about two weeks’ time.

For the interim, until the permanent crown is complete, your dentist will secure a provisional cap atop the prepared tooth for protection. This proactive measure safeguards the area until the finished crown is ready.

When the finished crown is completed, the dentist will replace the temporary one and securely set the permanent crown.

When your crown is ready to be fitted, crown drilling is the procedure employed. This process is easily administered in a single visit to the dentist office and is an uncomplicated effort.
