Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1966, George Bures Miller’s journey of artistic exploration began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1988. Two years later, he furthered his education at the University of Guelph, ultimately graduating with his Master of Fine Arts.
Miller’s works are a harmonious blend of technological pieces such as video, sound, and robotics that come together to form a multi-sensory environment meant to engage and captivate viewers. Through the creative manipulation of these cutting-edge tools, the artist is striving to construct a new kind of experiential reality that invites participation.
Miller and Tanya Tagaq joined forces to create an awe-inspiring exhibit – “The Bores”. This showcase displays eight gigantic figures equipped with sound features that interact with viewers as they explore the space. All the while, these sculptures emit their own unique acoustic melodies in tune with the movement of the people around them.
Miller’s knack for creative expression is evident in his captivating solo installations. One of these pieces is “The Watchers”, an exhibit comprising eight robotic heads that observe and track the movements of visitors. Similarly captivating is Miller’s “The Listener”, which invites viewers to tune into the sounds of their very own heartbeat.
Miller’s artworks are featured in a host of prestigious showings, including at the esteemed Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum, and Vancouver Art Gallery. His impressive accolades include receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004, amongst other awards.
