Dentistry relies on the use of a specialized tool called a dental carbide bur. Crafted from a specialized tungsten carbide alloy, these burrs aren’t merely hard and durable. They are also extremely sharp, making them capable of slicing through even the toughest of materials – such as tooth enamel and dentin – to ensure the most precise treatments. They come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, allowing for a wide range of dental procedures to be performed.
A handpiece, powered by a dental drill, is the device responsible for operating a carbide bur with rapid rotation. Depending on the task at hand, the specific kind of bur will determine the procedure’s success – whether restoration or creation.
Carbide burs can be employed for a variety of purposes in oral care, ranging from eliminating dental decay, readying a tooth for a crown or filling, to finishing off a smooth polish. With the same use, they can also chip away at old fillings and crowns, as well as prepping the tooth for when a root canal is necessary.
In order to employ a carbide bur, a dentist must select the perfect bur for their intended task. Afterwards, it is then placed in the handpiece and activated. The operator will then carefully manipulate the bur and handpiece over the selected tooth being treated.
As the dentist operates the burr, they work in a back and forth movement, calmly chiselling away at the toothy structure in careful increments. Every now and again, they pause to make sure that the alterations are thoroughly considered and that too much is not being taken away. When the desired amount has been achieved, the burr is removed from the handpiece before turning off the equipment.
The dentist will follow up by sanitizing the space and getting it ready for the upcoming dental operation.
