Martin Van Buren was a historical icon who served as America’s eighth President. Between 1837 and 1841, his iconic contributions to the thriving foundations of The Democratic Party earned him legendary status. He also holds the presidential distinction of being born an American citizen, a fact marked in the annals of history.

On the fifth day of December 1782, Martin Van Buren arrived in this world amongst the green hills of Kinderhook, New York- a settlement of Dutch descent. As a result, his parents, Abraham and Maria, raised young Van Buren to be broadly educated. This education would lead him from Kinderhook Academy to Columbia College in New York City where he advanced enough studies to become admitted to the bar in 1803. Upon completion of his training, Van Buren commenced his profession in law within The Big Apple.

After tying the knot in 1807, Van Buren and Hannah Hoes welcomed four children: Abraham, John, Martin, and Smith.

In 1812, Van Buren began his journey in the world of politics when he achieved a seat in the New York State Senate. His political career heightened eight years later, when he was elected to the United States Senate. By 1828, he had taken Governor of New York—a position he served in until 1832 when he stepped down to act as Secretary of State under President Andrew Jackson.

In the Presidential Election of 1836, Martin Van Buren was selected to serve as the United States’ Commander in Chief. He loyally held this position from 1837 to 1841, until he was unfortunately bested in the re-election race by William Henry Harrison four years later.

At the ripe old age of 79, Van Buren returned to his childhood home in Kinderhook. After many years of a life filled with public service, he eventually passed away on the 24th of July in 1862.

As a veteran politician and a master of diplomacy, Van Buren made a profound contribution to the evolution of the Democratic Party. His skillful involvement in the election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency in 1828 was of paramount importance. Moreover, he was instrumental in drafting the political framework of the Democratic Party that displayed a clear inclination towards widening the base of suffrage, uplifting investment in infrastructure and internal improvements, and promotion of protectionism.

Often labelled as a divisive president, Van Buren made certain decisions that were significantly controversial, including his backing of the Second Bank of the United States and the annexation of the Republic of Texas. Nevertheless, the nation was thriving under his term, showing economical prosperity and growth. He also effectively manoeuvred through the Panic of 1837, gaining credit as a successful president in the end.
